Administration Assistant
Brian Laurie
After leaving school with School certificate Brian undertook a carpentry
apprenticeship studying at Nelson Polytechnic and working for Wilkes
Construction, a company specialising in domestic and light commercial
buildings. He then opted for a stint overseas, initially in Cairns, and
later in Papua New Guinea for a decade where he acted as Construction
Supervisor for large companies such as Downer Construction and a number of
smaller firms. For a few years he oscillated between PNG, Cairns and Nelson,
and in 2000 he married Isabel whom he’d met in PNG and they returned in
late 2002 to settle in Nelson. A few months later Brian was afflicted with a
spinal infection which rendered him an incomplete tetraplegic. In 2006,
following his rehabilitation Brian invested in and operated a gym franchise
for a couple of years before joining the team at Burwood Academy of
Independent Living in August 2008 as a part time administration assistant.
Brian’s two young sons keep him very busy through their education, sport
and other activities, but he still finds time for his own gymwork, gardening,
friends and family.
