Regular physical activity through upper body training is effective in improving fitness and psychological well-being in people with spinal cord injury. However there are now reports that regular and intensive activity-based therapies promote neurological improvement. These therapies include partial body-weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT), functional electrical stimulation-assisted leg exercise, and exercises to improve control of trunk and lower limb musculature. There is some evidence that these interventions may improve an individuals' ability to move and perform functional activities, however this has not been rigorously tested in a randomised controlled trial.

2010 Alan Clarke Memorial Lecture

BAIL's International Adviser, Gerben DeJong, will deliver the 2010 Alan Clarke Memorial Lecture in the Limes Room, Christchurch Town Hall, at 7pm on Thursday 14 October 2010. Gerben will be undertaking several workshops in Dunedin (5-7 October) and Christchurch (12-14 October) as part of a Research Fellowship with Otago University's Rehabilitation & Disability Research Theme. Gerben will share some "thought provoking ideas about scientific research methods in the health sciences and rehabilitation and where he thinks we need to go"

Aspirationz holds pilot course in Hanmer Springs

Burwood Academy of Independent Living has created the ASPIRATIONZ brand to mange its programme of IL Development camps, and a piolot camp was held in Hanmer Springs over the 6-10 December period.

"It went extremely well" said Aspirationz Manager Sarah Crawford. "There are one or two areas we can improve on but we're very happy with our first ever course, as evidneced by the feedback from all particpants".

Aspirationz - see link on homepage- plans to hold 8 courses in 2011, in Auckland, Rotorua, Napier, Wellington, Nelson, Hanmer Springs, CHristchurch and Queenstown.

2010 Research Grants closed

We received 13 expressions of interest and 6 applicants were invited to make a full application for consideration of the Scientific Committee. The results will be apublished on this site after 30 July 2010

RDRT & BAIL Colloquium

The first ever joint colloquium between Otago University's Rehabilitation and Disability Research Theme (RDRT) and BAIL was held at the Allan Bean Centre in October 2009.

2010 Research Grants Are Open

The 2010 Research Grant round is now open and relevant documentation can be found under the Research tab. Closing date for the Expression of Interest stage is 3 May 2010.
