Julianne Johns

Clinical Researcher and Communications 

As a child, Julianne’s colouring book showing children in national costumes and the travels of an adventurous aunt, ignited a love of travel and connecting with others from different walks of life.

Her studies and work life have all gone on to incorporate language, communication, education and community. She worked in the areas of science and technology educational outreach, youth employment, refugee and migrant experiences and English-as-a Second Language until finding a happy place in speech-language therapy working with adults with cognitive, communication and swallowing impairments following acquired neurological injury in inpatient and community rehabilitation settings.

Already known to many around the Burwood campus in her role as a Speech-Language Therapist, Julianne has long had a particular interest in supporting patient voice and autonomy in health services and empowering people to flourish after loss or disablement. As a supporter of clinical research, she has had links with BAT over the years and is happy to join the team now as a research and communications assistant, growing her skills in research and community engagement.

In her leisure time, you will find her walking on the outskirts of the city with her mini-schnauzer pups, reading, yoga, taking in a movie or exhibition, going on adventures with her stepsons, and spending time with wider family and friends. Travel and exposure to ancient cultures are a source of wonder and inspiration, while, here in New Zealand she is drawn to the rivers, coasts and forests of the West Coast, Tasman district and Banks Peninsula, places of happy childhood holidays.

Bachelor of Speech-language Therapy (1^st Class Hons) – University of Canterbury

Post-Graduate Certificate Health Sciences (Clinical Rehabilitation) – University of Otago
